City prepares for possible inclement weather Friday

Released January 9, 2025

Reidsville City crews are getting ready for the area’s latest snow arrival expected this weekend.

A severe winter storm watch is in effect from 1 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday for the Piedmont Triad and most of central North Carolina. The forecast starts with snow eventually changing into a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain before ending early on Saturday morning. Highs near 34 degrees Friday are expected to drop as the snow begins tomorrow. Up to 2-3 inches of snow is currently in the forecast.

Based on the latest weather forecast, the Reidsville Public Works Department began pre-treating City roadways with salt brine on Thursday morning. The goal, according to Public Works Director Josh Beck, is to complete all major City streets and several key areas, including City facilities such as the fire stations, Water Treatment Plant, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Police Department and City Hall.

City crews have been loading plows and salt spreaders to begin working on the roads either through Friday night into Saturday or starting in the early morning hours of Saturday to hit most of the major roadways before traffic gets on them. All of this is contingent on the timing of the inclement weather event and actual precipitation, Beck said.

Police Chief Ray Gibson stated that extra police personnel will be on duty Friday night as well. He encourages residents to stay off the roadways if they can. If you become stranded, call 911 immediately as conditions are expected to be frigid and dangerous. Residents are also urged to park their vehicles off City streets if possible to allow room for the City’s snow plows and other machinery to work.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has also been making plans for roadways in the Piedmont Triad area. Inside the Reidsville City limits, NCDOT is responsible for salting and plowing several streets, including Freeway Drive, Scales Street, Barnes Street, Harrison Street and Richardson Drive.
